Report: Moynihan Station Plan Offers Great Transit Benefits

Provided it is well planned and executed, a grand new Moynihan Station will greatly improve the experience of those traveling from, to or through the station. The report outlines six specific transit benefits that Moynihan Station could bring, and offers an assessment of the Related/Vornado Venture's current plans for the station. While several design and function issues have yet to be resolved, the report reveals optimism toward the current development plans, which will transform the nation's busiest train station from dysfunction to the grand public space it should be.

The scope of transit benefits that could result from a well planned new Moynihan Station is expansive.

• A new, state-of-the-art train station would become a true Regional Rail Center that accommodates the significant growth in ridership anticipated in the next 20 years thanks to infrastructure and service improvements by NJ TRANSIT, Amtrak, LIRR and Metro-North.

• Moynihan West would preserve the celebrated architectural feature of the Farley Building, while breathing new life into it. Moynihan East would include two sunlight-filled, spacious train halls with convenient amenities. All together, Moynihan Station would provide Great Public Spaces to Midtown West.

• Moynihan Station would become a Catalyst for a New Transit-Oriented District around the station. It would also help to knit existing Midtown with the new planned development in the Far West Side.

• Today’s Penn Station is confusing and crowded. Moynihan Station would include several Passenger-Friendly Design features including clearer and wider circulation routes, coordinated and up-to-the-minute train information, better seating and more platform egress capacity.

• By adding to the street-level and underground pedestrian network, Moynihan Station would be well Integrated with the Neighborhood.

• Presently, NJ TRANSIT, LIRR and Amtrak operate relatively independently from each other. The new Moynihan Station would allow the different transit agencies to provide More Efficient and Flexible Train Operations, including shared platforms and combined ticket-selling.

The Venture's plans have great potential to achieve these benefits, but care must be taken to make certain that the developers' plans do not compromise the primary function of the Moynihan Station complex as a grand train station servicing the entire metropolitan region and beyond.
